Pokhara International Airport

Pokhara International Airport still under construction to get the eternal solution to the individual airport of Kathmandu International Airport. Air traffic, parking congestion, and old technology are causing complications to the only International airport of Kathmandu Tribhuwan International Airport. To resolve the existing problem Government of Nepal has been planning to construct a few other International airports for few decades. Among them, Pokhara Regional International airport is one of the planned projects which has been proposed to be commenced around early 2022.
Two other proposed international airports; Gautam Buddha International Airport and Neejgadh International airport have been listed as pride projects of the Nepal Government. Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) and the Nepal Government also aim to complete and operate Gautam Buddha International Airport in Lumbini by the end of March 2021.

The newly ongoing construction project of Pokhara International Airport is already has a small domestic airport. Nepal Government is constructing this Pokhara International Airport in Gandaki zone of Province 4. It is situated 3 km east of the current domestic airport which is well connected with the Prithvi highway. Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) acquired 155 Hectors of land in 1975 from a resident of that area. Nevertheless, the total area of Pokhara International Airport will be more than 200 hectares by its completion.

New Pokhara International can handle 1 million passengers annually. The airport will feature a 2,500-meter length and 45-meter wide runway. The airport ensures to support take-off and landing operations of large commercial aircraft such as Airbus A320, Boeing 737-700 series, and Boeing 757-200, taxiways, and access roads. Also, landside infrastructure will cover a 10,000 square meter international terminal and a 4,000 square meter domestic terminal. The main international terminal building will have a capacity to handle 650 passengers per hour.

The airport will have three parking bays for A320-type jets along with an aerobridge facility and five parking bays for ATR-type aircraft. There will be a separate terminal and parking area for domestic flights. The air traffic in Tribhuvan International Airport will be minimized after the operation of the Pokhara Regional International Airport. International tourists will have now an option to land either in Kathmandu, Pokhara, or Lumbini from the international flights according to their planned destination. Honorable Prime Minister KP Oli laid the foundation stone three years ago to welcome the international tourist directly to Pokhara. The target to finish the project and hand it to the Nepal Government was planned for July 2021. But due to a disastrous pandemic caused by Covid-19, the project has been delayed and has been proposed to be inaugurated in March 2022. Hence, the construction worker has been working continuously to meet the deadline. The workers are working hard to complete 92% of the work by 2020. New Pokhara Regional International Airport: Construction and Funding
To build this mega project in Pokhara, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal contracted this project to Chinese CAMC Engineering. The agreement was signed in the year 2014 May. However, the construction began in 2016 April. CAMC Engineer Company got the contract from CAAN for airport engineering and construction. Also, EXIM Bank of China provided $215.96 million loans with an agreement to the Nepalese Ministry of Finance. After all the agenda was met between the two sides, the construction started in August 2016. This project of the airport has offered a huge number of employments during construction.

This goes further even after the operation phase. As per the latest work progress reports from the Civil Aviation Department, almost 65% of the project is already completed.
